Autistic young people in mainstream have a higher risk of bullying, violence and discrimination. Belonging to any group with protected characteristic can be a risk factor for suicide. Also poeple that are are isolated or do not feel like they belong are more vulnerable. PAPYRUS exists to reduce the number of young people who take their own lives, by shattering the stigma surrounding suicide and equipping young people and their communities with the skills to recognise and respond to emotional distress. We believe that no young person should have to struggle alone with thoughts of suicide. Some of the Game Changers mentors complete training with PAPYRUS to be able to identify and talk about suicidal ideation that young people may be experiencing.
Finding funding can be difficult but based on UK law, Local Autorities are required to help famalies with an EHCP find alternative providers of education if school isn't working as a setting for your kid. Many families do not get the help they need because they do not know where to look or how to cut their way through the increasingly complicated system. This organisation aim to highlight resources and inspire and empower families to do this successfully by providing resources, tips, facts and examples.
